Animal Eyes is a World/Indie/Rock/Making-music-we-care-about band based in Portland, OR, but originating from Alaska. We all grew up in places where we had to drive 75 miles to get to the next town, and the towns we came from had populations under 4,000. There’s something about growing up in a place that’s so much bigger than any one person that gives you an appreciation for the grand scope of existence. And when it’s night and there’s five feet of snow outside and you and your friends are gathered around a cast iron stove in the middle of a yurt playing guitars, singing, and drinking beer, you learn what it means to be a warm-blooded human living with other warm-blooded humans in a small space surrounded by cold dark nothing for miles around.
With that sense of community, we go out into the world to see what there is to see and do our thing. We released our debut album, Found in the Forest, on Nov 9, 2011. You can find us on the internet, or on the road, or back at our home in Portland. No matter where we are, we'll probably be playing music, drinking beer, and doing what we can to enjoy this crazy ride.
Here's some nice things other people said about us:
“[ECLECTIC, ARTY WORLD POP] Animal Eyes’ debut album, Found in the Forest, unleashes the quintet into the Portland pop world in a big way. Hailing from Homer, Alaska (a tiny town of 4,000—seriously, Google it), and now based in Portland, Animal Eyes has an upbeat, art-pop aesthetic: something akin to a three-way love child between Dirty Projectors, Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective. Standouts on the debut include “Mezmin” and “You Saw,” both of which feature accordion and strings on top of howling, strained, impassioned vocals. If this solid debut is any indication of where Animal Eyes is headed, it should be all good things to come. “

“Animal Eyes are an exciting young band who exhibit a contagious enthusiasm in their live shows. Their energy is the sort of catharsis that has been the hallmark of the best of the upper echelon of Portland bands over the last several years. See them now so you can say you saw them when. ”
Arya David Imig – Backspace
“This is in Portland. Good. And not pretentious. Animal Eyes are a unicorn.”
